Commonly people define teamwork as being when everyone is pulling together. On Swanage lifeboat we have superior teamwork in abundance. We all pull together. Sadly this is counter productive when using the emergency steering system. In this situation it is preferable to only have one person pulling.....easier said than done.
Our emergency steering works well but is not so much designed to be used to steer the boat (though it can be used for this), rather it is intended to 'set' the rudders to achieve a straight course. Throttles can then be used to fine tune the course or alter course. We practised this on Sunday. I lost count of the number of times we turned 350 degrees to port to achieve a turn of 10 degrees to starboard. Later our track on the chart plotter looked not unlike joined-up-writing. I think it said.................
