Marooned

We used to use this bit of kit a lot. As you can see from the state of it, it is pretty much redundent nowadays. Can anyone guess what it is/was?

Is it used to hold a certain part of a lifeboatmans (not womans) anatomy?

as above, used to fire maroons to alert the crew that there was a need for them to launch. Now replaced by pagers, due to health and safety!
